A colourful peloton of 70 exhausted but jubilant cyclists entered central Durban late afternoon on the 3rd December having just completed 606km over a short two-day period.
Supported by various industry sponsors, the MRP Foundation is committed to empowering young South Africans from low-income and under privileged communities through various education and skills development programmes, assisting our country’s youth in reaching their potential and achieving their dreams. Since The Ride For MRP Foundation's very first event in 2010, over ZAR2 million has been raised, which has impacted the lives of thousands of young South Africans.
The South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) proud participatory team comprised of two of our most-loved rugby legends, Stefan Terblanche and Wayne Fyvie, and were joined by Paul Muller, who too is a cycling enthusiast and a longstanding, loyal supporter of our rugby legends through DSV. Over the two-day period, from Secunda down to Durban, the three-man team finished the gruelling 606km race with immense pride, and were joined by John Smit for the final stretch. Smit’s presence added fresh energy and inspiration to Terblanche, Fyvie and Muller, proving that this incredible challenge provides our Rugby Legends with deep purpose.
Considered South Africa’s most intensely challenging cycling event, The Ride For MRP Foundation continues to grow in size and legendary status. The SARLA Team’s Wayne Fyvie, former Sharks Rugby Captain, cycled for the second time, whilst it was Stefan Terblanche and Paul Muller’s first entry.
Day One of the race saw the team complete a 14 hour day comprised of 11.30 hours of cycling time totalling an epic 346kms. Day Two began with a sunrise start at 4:30am with a total of 260km. The race has had the added challenge of the country’s current blistering heat wave.
SARLA CEO, Stefan Terblanche, said from his bike at the finish line “A tough two days for a wonderful cause, and whilst extremely physically demanding, the ride has been incredibly satisfying, made even more special by the knowledge that our participation supports The Ride For MRP Foundation,” adding that “Their values are in complete synergy with those of SARLA, a perfect partnership which ensures that together, we support ongoing transformative skills training, to assist our underprivileged youth on their journey to a successful future. This is a vital focus for both the MRP Foundation and SARLA.”
