The 2020 Mandela Day Marathon - scheduled for 23 August at Capture Site in Howick in KwaZulu-Natal - has been cancelled.
That's after the stakeholders involved made a joint decision.
Those stakeholders include KZN Athletics, the KZN government, uMgungundlovu District Municipality, national government, and corporate sponsors.
They came to the conclusion that the current health environment in the country does not allow for the race to be held.
“The coronavirus pandemic has had a tremendous negative impact on the well-being of all our communities, of which our athletes are part of. Our country is beginning to experience a peak in transmissions as well as a spike in deaths due to the virus,” said ASA President, Aleck Skhosana. “Athletics South Africa, KZN Athletics and partners have a responsibility to ensure that the safety of our athletes and everybody else comes first. We continue to align ourselves with government regulations on the ongoing lockdown which disallows people to congregate in groups."
