Nissan has signed a multi-year deal to become the first primary shirt sponsor of Nashville Soccer Club.

Under the deal, the precise duration and financial terms of which have not been released, the carmaker’s logo will feature on the front of the team’s home and away shirts throughout the 2018 USL season and beyond. Nashville Soccer Club is set to join North America’s second-tier United Soccer League (USL) next year.

Nissan already has close ties to Nashville and the state of Tennessee. Its North American headquarters and some of its assembly plants are situated nearby, employing more than 12,000 people in the local area.

Nashville SC are one of five expansion teams set to join the USL when the league’s 2018 season begins in March, alongside Fresno FC, Las Vegas Lights FC, North Carolina FC, and a club owned and operated by Atlanta United of Major League Soccer (MLS).

The team’s majority owner John Ingram is also spearheading local efforts to bring MLS to Nashville. He recently secured a US$275 million financing plan for a soccer-specific stadium in the city, a move seen as critical to landing an expansion franchise in the top division.

“We are proud to have Nissan, a pillar of the Middle Tennessee community, as our flagship jersey sponsor,” said Michael Schetzel, the vice president of ticketing and corporate partnerships at Nashville SC. “Nissan’s reputation as an innovative, global brand is one we aspire to build at this club.”
